Intervention Considerations in Working with Men Who Batter
Course Description:
This workshop profiles the typical male batterer and other men prone to violence, as well as provides intervention considerations in working with men who perpetrate domestic abuse. The main objective is to enhance clinical skills for mental health/nursing/addictions counselors re: diagnosing and developing therapeutic sensitivity in treating those with impulse control disorders and their victims. A related goal is to explore the consistency of the relationship between loss and rage. This will assist participants in formulating specific intervention skills for violent or potentially violent clients.
Seminar Objectives:
At the conclusion of this seminar, the participant will be able to:
To increase awareness of predictors of violence
To enhance the level of comfort in working with perpetrators and victims of domestic violence
To understand the etiology of violence-prone behaviors
To enhance provider skills in diagnosing and treating violent offenders
To become a more informed service provider re: available community resources
To increase awareness, tolerance and understanding of perpetrators of domestic violence and to gain a perspective on the etiology of violent behaviors as they relate to loss
To understand the societal relationship to violent behavior
To humanize perpetrators of violence, thus enhancing therapeutic empathy and alliance
